Reporting an abandoned vehicle in Sutton is straightforward, but a car that’s been parked in the same place for a while isn’t necessarily abandoned.
There are several things you can check before making a report.
How can I tell if a vehicle might be abandoned?
Sutton Council says a vehicle may be abandoned if it:
- is no longer taxed
- has remained in the same place for a long period — for example, more than three weeks
- has flat tyres, missing wheels or broken windows
- has been burnt out
- has missing number plates. Sutton Council
One of these signs alone doesn’t necessarily prove that a vehicle has been abandoned, but they can help the Council assess a report.
Check whether the vehicle is taxed
You can check a vehicle’s tax status through the government’s DVLA service.
You’ll need the registration number and vehicle make.
If it is untaxed, make a note of the date the tax expired, as Sutton asks for this information when you make your report. Sutton Council
How do I report an abandoned vehicle?
Sutton provides an online map.
Search for the location, address or street, place a pin where the vehicle is located and complete the short form. Sutton Council
Report an abandoned vehicle to Sutton Council
You’ll normally need:
- the make and model
- registration number
- colour
- street or nearest street
- date the vehicle’s tax expired, where relevant
- your contact details in case officers have difficulty finding it. Sutton Council
There’s also a form for people with accessibility requirements or difficulty using the map, although Sutton says manually reviewed reports may take longer to act on. Sutton Council
What happens after I report it?
That depends on what officers find.
If the vehicle is untaxed, Sutton says it will contact the DVLA and inspect it within one working day of receiving the report. Sutton Council
If the vehicle poses a danger to the public, the Council says it will remove it within one working day. Sutton Council
For an abandoned vehicle that isn’t dangerous, the process can take longer.
The Council may put a warning notice on it for between 24 hours and 15 days, giving the owner an opportunity to remove it. Once that notice period expires, an unclaimed vehicle is removed within one working day. Sutton Council
What if a vehicle is blocking my driveway?
That’s different from an abandoned vehicle.
If a vehicle is blocking your driveway but isn’t abandoned, Sutton Council says you need to contact the police rather than use the abandoned-vehicle reporting service. Sutton Council
What if it’s simply an old-looking car?
Age and appearance aren’t enough by themselves.
A perfectly legal vehicle can look neglected, be dirty or remain parked in the same street for some time.
The useful question is whether there are genuine indications of abandonment, such as missing plates, significant damage, missing wheels or an expired tax status.
Checking first can avoid unnecessary reports.
What if I’ve already reported it?
Keep the details of your original report.
If you’re a Wallington North resident and a vehicle that appears genuinely abandoned remains unresolved after you’ve used the proper reporting process, you can contact your ward councillors with the location and report details.
