How to report noise nuisance in Sutton
We all expect a certain amount of noise when living close to other people. Children playing, neighbours coming and going, occasional parties and everyday household activities are part of residential life.
But what happens when the noise becomes excessive, continues late into the night or regularly disrupts your enjoyment of your home?
If you need to report noise nuisance in Sutton, there is a Council service that can investigate complaints and, where appropriate, take action.
However, not every irritating noise is legally considered a nuisance.
Here’s what residents need to know.
What counts as a noise nuisance?
Sutton Council’s Environmental Health Team investigates various types of noise complaints.
These can include:
- Loud music and amplified sound.
- Persistent noise from parties or entertainment.
- Noise from construction work or DIY.
- Car and burglar alarms.
- Noise from commercial equipment.
- Musical instruments and certain leisure activities.
The Council considers the circumstances of each complaint, including the nature of the noise and its effect on neighbouring properties. https://www.sutton.gov.uk/environment/environmental-health/report-noise-nuisance?
What noise won’t the Council normally investigate?
Not every sound coming from a neighbouring property is something the Council can take formal action against.
Sutton Council explains that normal everyday household sounds generally aren’t treated as statutory noise nuisances.
These include children playing, occasional dog barking, footsteps, doors closing, people talking and ordinary use of household appliances.
Although such sounds can sometimes be frustrating, they are not automatically unlawful.
The Council may still be able to offer informal advice in some situations. Sutton Council
Living alongside our neighbours
Most people want to enjoy their homes without disturbing others.
Sometimes a conversation and a little consideration are enough to resolve a problem. At other times, particularly when noise is persistent or excessive, formal investigation may be necessary.
Knowing when and how to report a problem can help residents take the appropriate next step.
